Vegas Raises Funds for Haiti and Local Organizations
The Divine Miss M raises cash for Doctors without Borders
Bette Midler, who raised $38,741.62 with her fans at her January 16 performance of The Showgirl Must Go On at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, will use her final performance in Vegas to double down. The Divine Miss M pledges to match all donations for Haiti Earthquake Relief collected at her finale on January 31.
During her January 16 performance, the singer moved guests when she said that she would match any money donated that night. As she launched into a haunting version of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” she asked guests to keep Haiti victims in mind during the song. As the audience filtered out, Bette’s Caesar Salad Girls, her showgirls, were waiting with collection baskets at the door.
Midler was so impressed with her fan’s generosity, that she decided to match all fan donations taken during her shows through the end of her run on January 31. The cash will go to Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization operating in Haiti. Doctors Without Borders /Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, to challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols. In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize.
