REVIEW: Café Nicola – a leap in time
Amazingly or not, I’ve always passed in front of Café Nicola, kept walking but never taken the time to sit and enjoy it. Why? Basically because I’ve always found it too busy to get in. I’ve always seen it a bit as a touristic trap.
This Sunday I woke up early and got there before 9am to check it, just before the crowds start to arrive. To my surprise there were already quite a lot of clientele and I was absolutely astonished by its beauty of the place and quality of service. It’s defiantly a must do in Lisbon, above all because it’s right in the heart of Chiado (map).
This historic café is quite renowned for its stellar breakfasts. It’s by excellence one of the most historic cafés in town. Founded in 1787 by an Italian named Nicola, it was the chosen place for the literary elite, namely the satirical poet Bocage who has given it it’s image.
Café Nicola has shiny 1930s Art Deco features with white marble tables and a terrace.
Down the stairs, the white-tablecloth restaurant serves top-notch lunch and dinner.
Where: Praça Dom Pedro IV, 24, at Chiado
Opened: 8am to 10pm;
