Chicago’s Best Places for French Toast
This cold Sunday in Chicago got me thinking about French toast and how all that buttery warm bread with powdered sugar sprinkled on top can be so comforting on a frigid winter day.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite places for a delicious dish of this culinary treasure; a French Toast Tip Sheet, if you will, that will help you find the perfect piece.
Lula Cafe in Logan Square makes their French Toast with brioche bread and uses such decadent stuffings as white chocolate. (773-489-9554: 2537 N. Kedzie Blvd.; map it)
Orange in Lincoln Park known for its chai-tea French toast made with bread soaked in chai latte and filled with ricotta cheese. (773-549-7833; 2413 N. Clark St.; map it)
Meli in Greektown uses honey and custard in its French toast dishes, and it’s worth every calorie. (312-454-0748; 301 S. Halsted St.; map it)
Bongo Room in Wicker Park whips up so many yummy French toast creations, it’s hard to pick one, so I will name a few goodies, including: Cherries Jubilee with “carmalized brioce and warm dark cherry compote and vanilla bean ice cream topped with cinnamon-brandy creme anglaise;” Chocolate Tower, with you guessed it, a lot of chocolate; and Strawberry-Rhubarb. ((773) 489-0690; 1470 N Milwaukee Ave.; map it)
Seven on Heaven in the downtown area has created a delicious banana foster French toast (deep fried no less) with challah bread and roasted pecans that will have you coming back for more. (312-263-6443; 111 N. Wabash Ave.; map it)

I love going out for breakfast, it is always a huge treat. French Toast is my favorite — with so many options, I would need weeks to try them all.
I think I just might need to take a trip to Chicago.
Love Seven on Heaven and the Bongo Room. It’s been many years, but I do remember seeing the French toast at Seven on Heaven. Chicago has great breakfast places.
Many many moons ago I went to Orange. Absolutely the best breakfast place in America. Amazing stuff – worth the hour queue to get a table!
Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments. I will definitely keep reporting on the best breakfast spots in Chicago as there are so many. Here’s to your next great piece of French toast! Lisa Davis
