Grant Park to host Christkindlmarket in Atlanta

The Grant Park Conservancy is hosting a Christkindlmarket  December 11 – 13th this year. Christkindlmarket is a Christmas Market traditionally held outdoors with lots of vendors, warm drinks and food. It is generally believe to have originated in Germany in the 14th century. Chicago has been hosting a very popular one for 14 years.HolidayMarket_Final_cmyk

The conservancy, which raises funds for park maintenance and restoration, wants to bring attention to the beauty of Grant Park (see map) in the wintertime (as well as raise funds for its preservation projects.)  There will be choral and instrumental groups providing music and over 100 artists with work in textiles, photography, jewelry and paintings. Vendors will serve warm drinks, beer and wine and festival foods. It opens at 3 pm Friday until 9, from noon until 10 pm on Saturday and noon until 7 pm Sunday. There is a $1 admission charge.

The Holiday Lights and Market is held in conjunction with the Grant Park Candlelight Tour of Homes, which takes place from 6 to 10 pm Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 Dec. 12 and 13. This is the 29th year of the tour, which features both historic homes (Craftsmans, Victorians) and modern homes.

Grant Park itself is the oldest park in Atlanta, given to the city in 1883 by Lemuel P. Grant. The 1903 development plant was designed by John C. Olmsted of the famous Olmsted landscape design firm. If you’re new here and haven’t heard of it of this 131 acre park, Grant Park is the home of Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Cyclorama. This year marks its 125th birthday.
