Best Exhibition in Barcelona on Now: World Press Photo 2009

As I have mentioned before here, every Sunday until the beginning of 2010, most museums in Barcelona offer free entrance. This is a great deal, and last Sunday a friend and I decided to take advantage of the freebie and go see the World Press Photo show at the central CCCB Museum.

Honestly, being that the photos shown are from the press, I expected a lot of war shots. However, I was pleasantly surprised because the show was much more than war and destruction. On display were photos by Steve Winter of the elusive snow leopard, profile shots  by Jerome Bonnet and photos of the Obamas on the campaign trail by Callie Shell.

There were, of course, some pretty intense photos of some of 2008 and 2009’s more horrifying events, like pictures by Chen Qinggang of China’s earthquake. All of the photos in the exhibition, no matter the subject they portrayed, had one common thread: mastery. Most of the people visiting the show (and there were many of us, as it was freebie day on Sunday at 7pm…) walked around the photography with wide eyes and jaws dropping. I was was certainly impressed, and came out of the World Press Photo 2009 show feeling not only inspired, but like I had learned something.

The show is on until the 13th of December 2009, so see it while you can at the CCCB.
