Review: Tasty Spicy Food at Sukhothai, Bairro Alto

With five years, I could hardly believe I had been missing this true Thai restaurant. Sukhothai stands right in the heart of Bairro Alto (map), Lisbon’s night scene centre, I had obviously passed through its doors many times. Just had not been drawn inside. And the reason is simple. It’s another small good looking restaurant, as many others in the area.

Once I got in, it’s the simplicity what I most liked. And the service. And the food. The products are fresh and the Thai chef has his seasoning brought from Thailand. The result, for me, was thinking for a second that I was there, as I took the first bite on my Pla neung manow (€16,95), a spicy steam cooked fish. The Thai music and the royal family photos certainly helped on that.

Still, the favourite dish of the house is obviously Pad Thai (€12,45), fried noodles with shrimp, vegetables, egg and peanuts. For dessert I was recommended an excellent pumpkin and coconut pudding, San ka ya fuk thong (€4,95).

Another great thing, once you’re done, as you step outside, you’re in the middle of all action.
