Sydney Goes Green with Christmas Lights and Decorations
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, with decorations and trees with twinkling lights popping up all over Sydney.
“City of Sydney takes great pride in decorating the streets and public spaces for the festive season,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore. “It’s a very special time of year and our sparkling trees, colourful flowers and bright lights help to create a magic atmosphere in the city.”
But the biggest display is yet to come, with the lighting of the 21-metre Christmas tree in Martin Place happening this Thursday from 6 pm.
The tree takes a workforce of 12 people eight days to install. It’s no wonder, with 58, 000 eco-friendly LED lights, more than 300 seven-pointed stars, and a 1500 mm star on top all decorating the tree.
But this isn’t the only tree in the city this year. A new six-metre high tree will light up Kings Cross, while similar trees will stand at Customs House, Sydney Square, and St. Mary’s Cathedral. A vibrant eight-metre high tree will reflect the artistic identity of Taylor Square, while a 7.5 m tree with 80 colour changing LED baubels will stand at the front balcony of Town Hall.
Look out for Southern Cross stars and floral displays around Erskineville Road, Crown Street, Redfern Street, Darlinghurst Road, and Glebe Point Road.
All those lights could be cause for concern in this modern world, but don’t worry. All electricity used will be matches with accredited GreenPower to ensure Sydney can enjoy many more Christmases to come!
