Meditations in a Temple Garden: The International Buddhist Temple, Richmond B.C.

DSC09815If you’re looking for a peaceful way to spend an afternoon,  head out to Richmond B.C. and visit the International Buddhist Temple on the Steveston Highway.  An easy journey from the Canada Line Richmond/Brighouse Station via #403 bus,  this is one of the most spectacular as well as tranquil places you’ll find in the Lower Mainland, where you can spend a day browsing the traditional Chinese gardens or meditating inside the temple itself.  And it’s free!

This temple is the most exquisite example of traditional Chinese architecture in Canada.  It’s modelled after the Forbidden City in Beijing, China and features Chinese imperial architectured, intricate stonework, symbolic carvings with elements of nature.  The tranquil grounds with statuary and burbling fountains is reminiscent of a scholar’s courtyard in ancient china.  Meander the pathways and see the beautiufl bonsai plants and gardnes of marigolds with traditional Tang Dynasty lanterns decorating the stone pathways leaidng to the staue of the serene Maitreya Buddha.DSC09820

You’ll be amazed once you enter the Temple area, at the fabulous, stunning golden statues, the artistic interiors with spectacular ceramic murlas, paintings, calligraphy and dozens of shrines.  The fragrant scent of inscense fills the air as before each shrine bundles of joss sticks burn and devotees pray before the Buddhas.

In the Thousand Buddha Hall you can seek the advice of the Avalokitesvara Buddhisattva, have your fortune told, and spend a quiet time contemplaing life. Or pay respect to your ancestor in the Ksitigarbha Buddhisattva Hall.

In the Worship Hall there are weekly meditation classes and Buddhist lectures held in both English and Chinese.

This  tranquil environment will surely inspire your mind and spirit. DSC09810
