Miami Book Fair

booksThere’s just one more day until the 26th Annual Miami Book Fair begins. This week long event will bring famed authors, book lovers, children, adults and those looking to enhance their cultural knowledge together at Miami Dade College. While some components of the festival had to be cut – such as the opening and closing ceremonies, the International Pavillion and the number of authors presenting – the heart of the festival is still there and this year will prove to be exciting.

To kick the festivities off each night, Twilight Tastings will take place. These will take place from 5:00 – 7:30 pm in Building 3 in the 5th floor Terrace. Stop by to get a taste of various Miami-area restaurants, a complimentary cocktail and  mingle with fellow book lovers. Participating restaurants include: Mamajuana Cafe, Casablanca Seafood, Hard Rock Cafe, Xixon Cafe and more.

Evenings with will give festival-goers a chance to listen to world-renowned writers. Some of these events are free, while others require a paid ticket so be sure to check the festival’s website for more information. Some highlights include Ruth Reichl (Mon. November 9 at 6:00 pm) discussing the new culinary landscape, an evening with Barbara Kingsolver (Mon. at 7:30 pm) and Jeanette Walls (Tues. November 10 at 7:30 pm).

Children’s Alley is a 3-day mini-festival just for kids. Interactive plays, story telling, puppet shows and other activities will take place. I’m leaning towards the All Things Seuss tent with drawing lessons for the kids, but Elmo, Arthur and Clifford will be part of the Children’s Alley also.

The Street Fair takes place from November 13-15 and includes the Festival of Authors, where more than 350 of the authors will read and discuss their works. Publishers and booksellers will also be on hand to display and sell their books.

Come with your hands empty and leave with them full as you bring home your reading material from these exceptional authors.

When: November 8 – 15, with the street fair taking place from November 13 – 15

Where: Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College (MDC), Wolfson Campus, 300 NE 2nd Ave., in downtown Miami.

Cost: Regular Admission is $8/person, 62 and over $5/person, free for Miami Dade College Students, those 18 & under and volunteers.
