Get Your Vegan On at Veggie Grill

Think tempeh is just for hippies?  One bite of the Veggie Grill’s Bali Bliss sandwich and you’ll quickly change your mind!

The Veggie Grill, with two locations in Irvine (UCI and Irvine Spectrum) and two location in Los Angeles, is a fast, casual restaurant that serves a variety of meatless meals.  I know what you’re thinking, and no it’s not just for vegans or even vegetarians.  With menu items such as Carne Asada and Bayou Chickin’ sandwiches, even the staunchest carnivores will find it hard to resist.

The chain was started by two Los Angeles investors and a natural food restaurant operator.  They wanted to create something that provides great tasting health food, something that will attract vegetarians and meat eaters alike.  Judging by the packed tables at the Veggie Grill every time I walk by, it seems as though they are meeting that goal!

Having been to the Veggie Grill several times, I definitely have my favorites.  For the main meal, I love the Grillin’ Chickin’ sandwich, consisting of “chicken”, avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cilantro pesto, and chipotle ranch sauce on a wheat bun.  Another very popular sandwich is the Bali Bliss, with and grilled tempeh (a soybean and rice patty), lettuce, tomato, red onion, and chipotle ranch sauce on a wheat bun.

The sandwiches come with red cabbage slaw, but I definitely recommend upgrading to the Sweetheart sweet potato fries or the Steamin’ Kale.  The fries come seasoned and with chipotle ranch dipping sauce, and the kale comes with a tasty ginger-miso dressing to sweeten up the bitter taste that kale is known for.

Don’t forget dessert – the carrot cake with soy cream cheese icing is, dare I say it, better than the real thing!

Whether you are looking for a “burger”, a salad, or just some soup, whatever you end up with at the Veggie Grill is sure to satisfy.

Prices: Sandwich meals range from $6.75-8.95, while salads cost $7.95-9.50.  Sides from $3.95-6.25, with soups at $2.95/cup and $4.50/bowl.
