Library Tourism in Edinburgh

If you’re struggling to find something off-beat to see in Edinburgh (and if you’re reading the PlanetEye Traveller, you aren’t trying hard enough).  How about checking out the local libraries?

Two great options are just steps off the Royal Mile (on George IV Bridge) and offer two differing tourism options.

  • The National Library of Scotland – this is Scotland’s copyright library, meaning it contains a copy of every book published in the UK.  You might doubt this given the seemingly small size of the library, but in fact it is a 13-story building!  You can’t tour the stacks themselves but you can look through some interesting exhibits in the foyer.  There’s also a cafe now – a great place to sit and enjoy sidewalk sunshine in the mid-afternoon.
  • Edinburgh Central Library – this is one of several public libraries in Edinburgh.  Check out the various reading rooms and get lost in the many corridors, architecture, and hiding places for locals to work, read, and relax.  A truly unknown city gem.
