REVIEW: Flores Restaurant – Chic Dining in Lisbon

Part of Lisbon’s first contemporary boutique hotel – Hotel Bairro Alto (map), Flores (Flowers) restaurant has managed to keep up the modern trendy-chic atmosphere.

On the right corner of the hotel lobby, as you enter into Flores you also pierce into a secluded room away from Chiados fuss. Serenity abounds in here and everything is made to assure you a tranquil evening. On the walls, black and white photos of Lisbon contrast with old style tiles. A superb combination of classic and modern look. Young attendants on comfortable unpretentious uniforms created a relax atmosphere. Lights and music are just low enough to add to the mood. Through big windows you can see Largo do Camões…

Flores restaurant serves contemporary world cuisine, embracing the typical Portuguese culinary heritage and the Mediterranean influences. The menu changes with each season and has Quality as the main goal. And I have to say they do it quite well.

_mg_5459As we were sited on a candle lighted table, neo-jazz music filled the room. The chef Luís Rodrigues made his recommendations for dinner – Roasted Monkfish for fish eaters and Thick Veal Steak for meat lovers. Still, he added, fish dishes are the mostly wanted.

Wondering if we should opt for the Degustation Menu (€45) that includes 5 favourite courses prepared by the chef, we ended following his last words and went for the wonderful Roasted Monkfish served with cashew nuts, mango and fresh tomato gnocchi (€24) and the Sea Bass in a Fish Broth with mushrooms and aspargus and potatos skewer (€26). For starters came a soft and delicious Cauliflower pureed soup (€10) and a Ceviche Sardines Brisée (€13). The meal was followed by a superb wine suggested by the waiter and finished with a tasty Vanilla Zambaglione (€5).

You can choose to have your coffee, tea or drink at the terrace, on the 6th floor. The views are outstanding and truly a must.

Flores Restaurant is also an excellent option for lunch with a somewhat simpler menu and a faster service.
