Sportello Boston

Italian goes modern-retro cool at Sportello (348 Congress St., Boston, 617-737-1234) (Map), chef Barbara Lynch’s  funky diner in Boston’s up and coming Fort Point neighborhood.

The communal lunch counter and open kitchen has a terrific urban vibe where the emphasis is on a focused menu of homemade pastas, simply composed salads, soups, sandwiches and creative trattoria classics .

Homemade scallion bread comes to the table with whipped ricotta and jam- a nice touch. The ricotta ravioli with duck polpetti , radicchio and pecorino is sublime.  The  gnocchi with porcini, peas and cream is pillow light and flavorful.

The warm bread pudding with jam and honey caramel really hits home. And the chocolate budino tart with olive oil and sea salt  is an unexpected wonderful marriage of tastes and flavors. There’s  a good selection of wine and the on-site take-out/ bakery adds to the upscale feel.
