Vegas is all about Wine

he Zen of Wine

Wine tasting may be the ultimate Zen experience, as it forces you to be in the moment by engaging all of your senses.  First, one looks at the color of the wine and observes the way light refracts through the liquid; you watch how it swirls in the glass and how the wine coats the surface and meanders back down; you breathe in the heady aroma, then take a small sip, letting it flow over your tongue and down your throat. What fragrances remain on the back of your tongue, in the hollows of your skull? What is the feeling at the back and on the roof of your mouth? How long does the fragrance last, and does it change as you breathe deeply? Is there a single flavor, or does it break apart into highs and lows and hidden aftertastes?

Like enlightenment, wine is a journey, more than a destination. In Vegas, there are more places to travel than ever before and with the most master sommeliers of any city in the world, more guides to get you there. Even in a tight economy, the quality of wines available is unparalleled, says Master Sommelier Ron Mumford, who oversees the fine wine division for Southern Wine & Spirits. “That’s good for the industry because as you learn more, you can drink better wine for less money. People are drinking less,” he adds, “but they are drinking better.”

To help you drink better, we’ve cobbled together a variety of wine experiences for you to explore. But the best way to learn, one local told us, is to “Drink! Drink! Drink!” So, go forth and taste, Grasshopper. Whatever you discover, your journey begins in Vegas.
