Bairro Alto district – old Lisbon bairro with superb cultural and nightscene

One of the oldest districts in Lisbon, Bairro Alto is also one of the nicest. What once was an area of visible prostitution and some danger has turned into one of the major zones for night entertaining and day (and night) shopping.

Since the 1990´s all the area went through major changes, bringing a new life to Bairro Alto. Today exquisite restaurants, design stores, clubs and some of the nicest hotels and hostels are placed in the heart of this district. Fado singing clubs animate the evening of those that don’t want to go all the way to Alfama district.

Cars were banned (except for residents), which brought a whole new way of living Bairro Alto. Young people started to move into the area. Today this is one of the  hearts of the city’s cultural and night scene. Strangely, during the day you can still feel what’s like to be in an old Lisbon bairro.

Whether you’re visiting during the day or out for a night, the best way is to just wonder around and choose your place to stay along the way.

Some of the places not to miss:

Clubs and cafés:
L’enfant terrible – nice parisien café at rua da rosa (map)
Majond, Arroz Doce, Capela, Frágil, Clube da Esquina – for night scene around Rua da Atalaia (map)

Restaurants:
1º Maio
Bota Alta
Pap’Açorda
Cantinho do Bem Estar
