Review: Fresh, Fashionable Food at Zanzero in Edinburgh

I had the most brilliant lunch last week at Zanzero, a bright and cheery cafe/restaurant just on the edge of trendy Stockbridge.  It’s a great little hideaway from the hustle and bustle of George Street and Princes Street – a perfect getaway from the festival madness methinks.

Zanzero is a sister to Centotre, another one of Edinburgh’s best restaurants. While there are a few similarities – great food being one of them – the Zanzero experience has its own personality.

Ambience

Petite in size (but with a great sidewalk terrace), Zanzero is quite cosy.  The decor is bright pastels with a splash of florescent colour, which normally would be terrible, but the place pulls it off beautifully.  There are booths next to the windows that really soak up the light, or if you’re looking for a mobile office for a few hours, check out the fantastic window seats facing the street. (There’s free Wifi!)

Staff

Similar to their sister restaurant, breezy efficient service is the name of the game at Zanzero.  Whether you’re having a lunch meeting, quiet dinner, or somewhere in between, the staff here leave you to it yet seem to show up just when you need something.  How cool is that?

The Courses

Keep in mind, Zanzero uses a seasonal menu to make best use of the freshest ingredients and keep things inspired.  For lunch, I had a freshly prepared juice drink with orange juice, pineapple, and ginger.  It was really tasty and great value for money considering it was prepared to order, unlike those bottled mixed juices you can buy in the shops.

Lunch for me was pizza – a good sized portion with super super fresh mozerella and prosciutto and a few bits of chili to turn up the heat.  I’m not one for super spicy food, but I thought this was a nice touch, not too hot at all.

Never being one to turn down the opportunity to indulge, I had one of their signature cupcakes – they’re straight out of Alice in Wonderland and while no halucinations happened while eating them, they where phenomenal.  Definitely worth saving room for.

I must say the coffees here are superb – better than other restaurants serving the same stuff.  Not sure what they’re doing differently, but hope they keep it up.

In Summary

Zanzero is fashionable, fun, but still great value for money.  Pop in for a coffee in cake, stay connected with the free Wifi, or head over for some fresh and tasy Italian classics.  Yum!
