On my first trip to,  “The Old Swiss Inn”, I discovered that the Swiss and the Pinoys have something in common. These two races may be polar opposites when it comes to appearance, values, and traditions. But as I looked at my cheese-coated bread, I realized that they both love to reach out across the dining table.

Fondue is a communal pot of boiling cheese. It is a Swiss creation- born out of the need to make use of hardened cheese. (Recycling food is very Pinoy as well!) The diners gather around the pot and take pleasure in dipping bread cubes in melted Gruyere. Old Swiss Inn’s Waatlander Fondue is well suited to Filipinos who love interactive eating. It’s common practice for Pinoy families and friends to have someone reach over the table and fork at your plate to get a taste of what you’re having.

This love for communality and sharing food was especially true for the meat dish we ordered. Fondue Bourguignonne- prime beef tenderloin cubes to be dipped in hot oil. It came with a carousel of sides and sauces. So you really can have a bit of everything. The winner for the night was undoubtedly the curry dip but the salsa was a close second.

Drop by the Old Swiss Inn on those late nights when you’re trying to find a suitable place to nurse a hangover. They’re always open. Their fondues here are quite affordable (P650 for cheese and P950 for the meat). When you’re craving cheese and Swiss style communal eating, you know where to go.
